The Stuff that Childhood Memories are REALLY made of!…

on June 17, 2013

We’re in the garden at Grandma and Pop’s and cousin Molly asks Pop if she can take our little bear to see the den she built.  Pop says it’s been cleared away but suggests making another one.

Excited, Molly disappears through a hole in the hedgerow.  Our little bear wants to follow her.  Pop also disappears through a (bigger!) hole in the hedgerow!  I part the branches and guide our bear thorugh while Pop offers her his hand to guide her through to the other side.

It’s like stepping through the garden equivalent of the wardrobe into the farm equivalent of Narnia…

Pop is gathering small branches from the ditch and before we can blink our bear has grabbed a big branch and is clearly determined to drag it to the den site herself!  I offer to help but she point blank refuses and with steely determination, she says, “I’ve done it!” and runs back to where Pop and Molly are to get some more branches!

With the den built, we go back through the hedge and play ball games and blow bubbles in the garden.  As a child I remember aspects of growing up on a farm being magical.  Although you don’t necessarily realise it at the time, you’re in quite a priviledged position.  Building dens at the bottom of the garden, having a ride on a tractor at the drop of a hat, feeding next door’s cows…  Now that our little bear has this world open to her, we embrace it and let her get on with it.

Truly the stuff the childhood memories are made of!
